The Augustinian canon Floridus Röhrig created the design for the Leopold Cross . In doing so, he was guided by the Austrian Imperial Leopold Order .

In the period from 1985 to 2002, 5 gold, 18 silver and 43 bronze crosses were awarded.

The award has been given since 1985 in the three classes of bronze, silver and gold by the respective provost of the monastery. Since 2015, the highest level has been awarded the “Gold Leopold Cross Star”. The award can be received by both priests and lay people. The canons themselves and families of the monastery are excluded . The bronze medal is worn as a breast decoration, silver and gold as a neck decoration.
