Les Crane (born December 3, 1933 in Long Beach , New York or San Francisco , † July 13, 2008 in Greenbrae , California ; actually Lesley Stein ) was an American radio and television presenter.

life and career

After graduating from Tulane University in New Orleans, Crane spent four years in the Air Force . After that, his career began as a host of radio and television shows. His Night Line produced by the broadcaster ABC (later Les Crane Show ) could not prevail against Johnny Carson in the end, although Crane provided important impulses. For example, he conducted the first interview with the Rolling Stones on American television. In 1966, Crane starred in the film Murder, based on a book by Norman Mailer . Phil Ochs mentions Crane in his song Love me, I'm a Liberal .

From 1966 to 1974 Crane was married for the fourth time to the singer Tina Louise , with whom he has a daughter, Caprice Crane (* 1974), who now works as an MTV producer and writer. In 1971 Les Crane released a record of the Max Ehrmann poem Desiderata . The song made it to number 8 on the US charts and number 7 on the UK charts. In Germany, Cranes spoken song reached number 32, with a German-language version by Friedrich Schütter being heard on the B-side . Crane received a Grammy for this recording .

In the 1980s, Crane changed industries and became chairman of The Software Toolworks .
