Leschniw (Ukrainian Лешнів ; Russian Лешнев / Leschnew , Polish Leszniów ) is a village in the Ukrainian Lviv Oblast in western Ukraine with about 1100 inhabitants.
The village is located in the west of the historical landscape of Galicia in Brody Raion on the Slonivka River (Слонівка), about 18 kilometers north of the Brody Rajon center and 88 kilometers northeast of the Lviv Oblast center.
Together with the village Hrymaliwka (Грималівка) Koroliwka (Королівка) Lissowe (Лісове) and Pisky (Піски) it forms the district municipality Leschniw .
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1471, was later awarded the Magdeburg city charter, was initially in the aristocratic republic of Poland-Lithuania , Ruthenian Voivodeship , and in 1772 came as Leszniow to the then Austrian crown land of Galicia (until 1918 with the status of a market in the district Brody ).
After the end of the First World War, the place became part of Poland , from 1921 it was incorporated as Leszniów into the Voivodeship of Lemberg , Powiat Brody , Gmina Leszniów and was only occupied by the Soviet Union during World War II and from 1941 to 1944 by Germany and the Galicia district connected. After being reconquered by Soviet troops in 1944, it came back to the Soviet Union in 1945 and was incorporated into the Ukrainian SSR , since 1991 the place has been part of today's Ukraine. Under Soviet rule, the market status was revoked in 1939 and downgraded to a village.
A synagogue built around 1677 was destroyed in World War II.
