Levent Tezcan

Levent Tezcan (* 1961 in Havza ) is a university professor and sociologist . He is professor for social science research into Islam of the 20th and 21st centuries at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster .

biography

Levent Tezcan initially studied political science at Ankara University from 1978 to 1985 and fled to Germany in 1988 . From 1989 to 1993 he continued his studies in social sciences at the University of Bremen . He then worked as a research assistant for the sociologist, conflict and violence researcher Wilhelm Heitmeyer at the University of Bielefeld , and was there in 2001 with the study of Religious Strategies in Feasible Society . Managed religion and Islamist utopia in Turkey in the subject of sociology for Dr. rer. soc. PhD . From 2008 to 2015 he was Assistant Professor at the School of Humanities, Department Culture Studies at Tilburg University , further an associate member at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence at Bielefeld University and from 2014 to 2015 Visiting Research Fellow at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg Dynamiken der Religionsgeschichte at the Center for Religious Studies (CERES) at the Ruhr University Bochum . At CERES Tezcan was busy until January 2019 before a call to the chair for the social scientific study of Islam in Europe in the 20th and 21st centuries at the Institute of Sociology at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster followed. At the Cluster of Excellence Religion and Politics at the University of Münster, he is involved in a project on forms of Islamic lifestyle under conditions of cultural diversity.

Tezcan was invited scholar of the German Islam Conference and has published several times about it. His main research interests include the sociology of Islam , issues of migration and religious diversity as well as politics and religion in Turkey .
