Levin is a town in the Horowhenua District of the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand . It is the administrative seat of the district.
Origin of name
Originally, the city after an agreement with the Māori - Chief Te Kepa Rangihiwinui Tautoka are called, but later after the Wellington he Kaufman and politician William Hort Levin named, among others, the founding director of the Wellington - Manawatu Railway Company was.

The city is located on a fertile plain, around 85 km northeast of Wellington and 40 km southwest of Palmerston North . To the east and south-east of the city rises the mountain range of the Tararua Range, up to 1546 m high, and to the west of the city is Lake Horowhenua .

Road traffic
Through the city leading New Zealand State Highway 1 , the Levin with Wellington in the south and to the north connects back to the northern parts of the country. South of the city, State Highway 57 branches off from State Highway 1 , passes the city east and connects it with Palmerston North in the northeast.
Rail transport
The North Island Main Trunk Railway runs through Levin . The Overlander , which connects Wellington with Auckland , and the Capital Connection , a passenger connection from Palmerston North to Wellington, operate on the route .
Education
In the city area there are two branch offices of the Victoria University of Wellington and two colleges , Waiopehu and Horowhenua College .
Attractions
In the city is the Tokomaru Steam Engine Museum , which tells something about the heyday of rail transport in the region.
