Levitha ( Greek Λέβιθα [ ˈlɛviθa ] ( n. Pl. )) Is a Greek island in the municipality of Leros in the South Aegean region that is only inhabited by one family .

geography

Levitha belongs to a group of six small islands and some rocky islands that lie between the Dodecanese islands of Leros and Kalymnos in the east and the Cycladic island of Amorgos in the west. Astypalea is to the south . In addition to Levitha, this group of islands consists of the two Mavra Islands, Glaros, Kinaros and Plaka.

The island has an area of 9.121 km² and reaches in the center with the Vardia (Βάρδια 'guard') a height of 130 meters. There is a lighthouse at Akra Spano , the easternmost point on the island . The coast of the island is very rugged, on the south side there are two larger bays which, as natural anchorages, offer protection from northerly winds and are therefore popular with sailors. The small settlement is located near the eastern bay. The typical plants of the macchia and phrygana determine the landscape.

history

In ancient times the island was known under the name Lebinthos (Λέβινθος), which is of pre-Greek origin.

Old buildings have been identified that were apparently related to the development of a small fishing village. During the Roman period, Lebinthos served as a place of exile due to its remoteness.

Lebinthos is mentioned identically by the Roman poet Ovid in two of his works: In the Ars amatoria (II, 81) and in the Metamorphoses (VIII, 222), in connection with the legend of Daedalus and Icarus . In the course of their flight from Crete, father and son fly over a number of islands, among them Lebinthos is mentioned: "... on the right hand was Lebinthos ..." ("... dextra Lebinthos erat ..."). One can assume that Ovid used a “lexicon” or a geographical map in a library in Rome when selecting the Aegean islands that mark the escape route of the two “first fliers of mankind” and that this rare name was taken as “ poeta doctus ” Has.

Lebinthos is also mentioned in Strabo , Geographie (10.5.12)

Levitha today

A family lives on the island in the 8th generation, who tries to orient their life towards ecological behavior and thereby combine traditional living and cultivation methods with the use of renewable energies. They operate agriculture for their own supply and sale and keep goats (650 animals in 2017), and a photovoltaic system provides power. The income from a tavern for the boats moored in the bay serves to raise income.
