Levon Ekmekdschian

Levon Ekmekdschian ( Armenian Լևոն Էքմէքճեան , Turkish Levon Ekmekçiyan , * 1958 in Bourj Hammoud , Lebanon ; † January 28, 1983 in Ankara , Turkey ), also Levon Ekmekjian or Abu Raschid , was a Lebanese terrorist and member of the extremist Armenian organization Asala .

Together with his accomplice Zohrab Sarkisyan, he carried out a bomb attack on the Ankara-Esenboğa airport on August 7, 1982 . When the security forces intervened, his accomplice was killed in an exchange of fire and Ekmekdschian withdrew to the airport restaurant with numerous hostages until he gave up after several hours and was caught wounded. Nine people died and 72 were wounded in the attack. A German engineer was also among the fatalities. After receiving medical treatment, Ekmekdschian was transferred to Mamak Military Prison.

He had a choice between execution and confession: after he was promised that he would not be executed if he disclosed the plans and activities of the asala, he announced everything. A team led by the Presidential Liaison of the National Intelligence Service MİT and Kenan Evren's son-in-law Erkan Gürvit came to his prison . The promise for him was not kept.

After the military trial, Ekmekçiyan, sentenced to death on September 7, 1982, was executed on January 28, 1983 in Ankara No. 3 Military Prison . His funeral took place at Cebeci Asri Mezarlığı Cemetery in Ankara.
