Ankara Central Prison
The Central Prison Ankara , shortly also Ulucanlar Cezaevi (Turkish .: Ankara Merkez Kapali Ceza ve Tutukevi , German: "Closed Criminal and prison Ankara Center") in a 1921 in what is now the district Altındağ in Ankara built decorated military depot.
history
From 1925 the building complex was built according to plans by the German architect Carl Christoph Lörcher . The complex resembles a small town, although it is surrounded by high stone walls. The architectural style of individual buildings is a mixture of reduced European classicism with Ottoman style elements.
The central prison was closed on July 1, 2006 and has since served the population as a museum and a cultural and art center. The renovation work meant that a large number of the old signs of use were whitewashed. The impression of replicated prison rooms, animated by wax figures (and wax mice), which were designed for 70 prisoners, gives an impression of the conditions in the prison. The building for the prominent prisoners, the so-called Hilton , has also been preserved. There, three or four inmates shared a small living area. In 2011 the Ulucanlar Cezaevi Müzesi Museum was opened.
There is a gallows in the courtyard near the entrance to the facility . He commemorates Deniz Gezmiş , the co-founder of the People's Liberation Army of Turkey (THKO), an offshoot of the 1968 movement in Turkey . Here Gezmiş was on May 6, 1972 after a military trial along with Yusuf Aslan and Hüseyin İnan hanged . A plaque commemorates a total of 18 hanged people . In 1980 other opposition activists were executed in the same place : Necdet Adalı , Mustafa Pehlivanoğlu and Erdal Eren .
