Osman Bölükbaşı (* 1913 in Hacıbektaş , Ottoman Empire ; † February 6, 2002 in Ankara , Turkey ) was a Turkish university professor, politician and party leader. The charismatic speaker was referred to by the people as the whirlwind of Anatolia (Turkish: Anadolu Fırtınası) for his quality of not falling on his mouth .

Early life

Bölükbaşı was born in Hacıbektaş in 1913 . He finished secondary school in Istanbul. He then studied mathematics at the University of Nancy in France and graduated in 1937. A year later he returned to Turkey and worked as Fatin Gökmen's assistant at the Kandilli Observatory in Üsküdar . In 1940 he accepted the position as a teacher at the Haydarpaşa College and stayed there until 1946.

Political career

His political career began when he was introduced to the co-founders of the Democratic Party (DP), Mehmet Fuat Köprülü and Celâl Bayar , by Fatin Gökmen and joined the party in 1946. Although he rose quickly within the DP, he left the party in 1947 because of a controversy over criticism of the ruling Republican People's Party (CHP).

On July 20, 1948, he founded the Nationalist Nations Party ( Millet Partisi , MP) with the former chief of staff Fevzi Çakmak and others . But in 1949 Bölükbaşı was arrested due to a conspiracy against Celal Bayar and the chairman of the CHP İsmet İnönü . He was released a short time later.

In the parliamentary elections in 1950 , Bölükbaşı was the only MP to win a mandate in his home province of Kırşehir and entered the Turkish National Assembly for the first time . A short time later the MP was banned in 1953 due to "anti-secular activities". The MP members founded the successor party Republican Nations Party ( Cumhuriyetçi Millet Partisi , CMP). The CMP was able to win five parliamentary seats in 1954 , all of which come from Kırşehir like Bölükbaşı.

The election winner DP then lifted the status of the province of Kırşehir and joined it to the neighboring province of Nevşehir . Although Kırşehir became independent again by law from June 1957, three districts - including the place of birth Bölükbaşıs - remained with Nevşehir. Bölükbaşı reacted indignantly to this parliamentary decision and received a disciplinary penalty. His immunity was lifted because he had a fight with DP MP Ahmet Kocabıyıkoğlu in the course of this vote in the parliamentary corridor. He was arrested and sentenced for insulting Parliament in July 1957.

In the next elections on September 27, 1957 , Bölükbaşı was able to win another mandate and took his parliamentary oath in pajamas in front of his cellmates in Ankara Central Prison . A short time later he was released in October 1957 because of his regained immunity.

In order to form a stronger opposition party, the CMP merged with the Peasant Party of Turkey ( Türkiye Köylü Partisi , TKP) to form the Republican Peasant People's Party ( Cumhuriyetçi Köylü Millet Partisi CKMP). Bölükbaşı was sentenced to ten months in prison in 1959.

After Adnan Menderes' DP was overthrown by the military coup in Turkey in 1960 , Bölükbaşı was a member of the Constituent Assembly ( Kurucu Meclis ) as a representative of the CKMP . Bölükbaşı saw the coup as justified. This time he won a mandate for Ankara in the 1961 elections , but in his typical manner refused to form a coalition with the CHP. He left the CKMP in 1962 with 28 MPs because of internal disputes and re-founded Millet Partisi in June 1962 . Bölükbaşı later became a coalition partner of CHP İsmet İnönüs. In 1965 the MP became part of the government of Prime Minister Suat Hayri Ürgüplü from the Justice Party (AP). Bölükbaşı himself did not become a member of the cabinet and continued to criticize the government. His former CKMP party changed its name to the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) in February 1969 .

Later years

Osman Bölükbaşı resigned in 1972 from the office of party chairman of the MP. The reasons were the differences of opinion within the party and the injustices of the party members against a good friend of Bölükbaşıs named Hasan Koçdemir. A little later, on September 9, 1973, he gave up his mandate as a member of the Ankara Province, which he had held since 1961, and withdrew from active politics.

Although many people attended his election campaigns, he complained that although he had a large audience, few voted for him.

On February 6, 2002, Bölükbaşı died of lung failure in Ankara University Hospital. His body was buried two days later after a funeral ceremony in the Kocatepe Mosque in the Cebeci Municipal Cemetery. Bölükbaşı was married to Mediha Bölükbaşı (nee Büyükyağcıoğlu) and his son Ahmet Deniz Bölükbaşı was the ambassador of Turkey and a high official within the MHP.
