Lewis B. Rome

Lewis B. Rome (born September 12, 1933 in Hartford , Connecticut , † July 1, 2015 ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Life

Lewis B. Rome studied at the University of Connecticut in Hartford , where he received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1954 . He then continued his studies at the University's Law School and received a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 1957 . In the same year he was admitted to the bar of Connecticut and admitted to the US District Court District of Connecticut . Rome now practiced as a lawyer. He later became a partner in the law firm Rome McGuigan , as well as in the lobby company Rome, Smith & Lutz .

1961 Rome was in the Town Council of Bloomfield chosen and belonged to this 1969. From 1965 to 1969 he was also mayor of the city. In 1970 he was elected to the Connecticut Senate and was a member of it from 1970 to 1979. As a senator he was from 1973 to 1975 majority leader ("Majority Leader"). After the Democrats achieved a majority in the 1974 Senate elections, Rome acted as opposition leader from 1975 to 1979 ("Minority Leader").

In 1978 Rome was the running mate of Congressman Ronald A. Sarasin when he ran for Connecticut governor . However, they were defeated by the Democrats Ella T. Grasso and William A. O'Neill . In 1982 Rome ran himself for the office of governor and stood against the Democrat O'Neill, who had taken over the office after Grasso's health-related resignation. In the previous Republican nomination ( primary ) Rome had prevailed against Richard C. Bozzuto and Gerald Labriola . The latter became Rome's running mate. In the gubernatorial election, Rome O'Neill was defeated by 497,773 to 578,264 votes.

After the end of his political career, he served on various administrative bodies for the next few decades, including those of Hartford Hospital , John Dempsey Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital . From 1992 to 1997 he was chairman of the University of Connecticut's Board of Trustees .

Rome died on July 1, 2015 at the age of 81.
