history

St. Leo Church, Lewistown

What is now Lewistown used to belong to the Blackfoot Indian territory. In 1874, the Fort Lewis military base was built here , after which Lewistown is named. Their job was to ensure the protection of travelers on the Carroll Trail. The Carroll Trail was the shortest connection between Carroll and Helena at the time .

The first permanent settlers were Métis , who established Lewistown in 1879. Among them was Francis A. Janeaux, who founded the city's first public school in 1883. Today is the official time of the foundation.

In 1880 Lewistown experienced a gold rush when gold was found in the nearby Judith Mountains . Until then, Maiden had been the largest city in central Montana. When the gold shipments failed to materialize, many of the miners settled permanently in Lewistown and found work there.
