history

Founding time

The city was founded in 1795 and got its name from William (known as "Bill") Lewis, a Quaker who, as a member of the legislature, was also responsible for the naming of the place. The town was previously known as the Village of Ohesson .

Economic heyday

During the late 19th century, the city became an important transportation hub for the state , not least because of its central location in the middle of Pennsylvania . At first it was just simple roads that led through the region. With the completion of the Pennsylvania Canal and the railroad , Mifflin County grew into a major business location. Lewistown’s economy boomed with the establishment of shipyards as well as hotels and restaurants for commercial travelers.

Civil war

On April 16, 1861, Lewistown sent their so-called "Logan Guards", a military group founded in 1858, to Washington, DC to defend the city. They were one of only five other troops, all from Pennsylvania, to be the first troops to be sent to the capital. Monument Square in Lewistown still serves as a memorial to these men .

present

Today Lewistown is overshadowed by State College , which is home to Pennsylvania State University . The Embassy Theater, the McCoy House, the historic Mifflin County Courthouse, the Montgomery Ward Building, and the Wollner Building are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
