LIAZ (Liberecké automobilové závody, German Liberecer Automobilwerke ) was a Czech automobile manufacturer based in Jablonec nad Nisou -Rýnovice. It has been Škoda's commercial vehicle division since it was founded in 1951 . In 2017 the Czechoslovak Group was founded.

history

The company Laurin & Klement, founded in Jungbunzlau ( Mladá Boleslav ) in 1894 , which launched the first commercial vehicle in northern Bohemia in 1901 and thus initiated the motorization of the Austro-Hungarian postal service, took over the Reichenberger Automobilfabrik (RAF) in 1913 , the 1, 5- to 6-tonne trucks with four-cylinder engines and tracked vehicles were offered.

Production was expanded and, in addition to motorized plows and road rollers, the company now also had army vehicles and omnibuses in its range. Various new models were presented in the first years of Czechoslovakia .

In 1925 Laurin & Klement merged with the Škoda plants in Plzeň . Škoda had started building military vehicles during the First World War , and civil vehicles were produced again from 1919.

After the merger, trucks and buses were manufactured in Plzeň, and mainly passenger cars in Mladá Boleslav. The vehicles had been developed by Laurin & Klement, but the new brand name was Škoda .

After the end of the Second World War , truck production in the Plzeň plant, which was largely destroyed by bombs, ceased in 1945. The company was nationalized.

In 1947 Avia began manufacturing Škoda trucks and buses in Prague . In 1951 Avia resumed aircraft production, and the production of commercial vehicles was transferred to Liberecké automobilové závody (LIAZ) in Liberec with factories in Rýnovice Jablonec nad Nisou and Mnichovo Hradiště .

LIAZ was officially founded on January 1st, 1951 in Jablonec nad Nisou as an independent company. The vehicle types and the brand name “Škoda” were retained, the name “LIAZ” was not given to the trucks until 1974.

The Škoda 706 RT was presented in 1957 , and production of the old models was ended soon afterwards. A new type of bus, the Škoda 706 RTO, was derived from this model . The development of the buses was completely transferred to Karosa after a few years . However, numerous LIAZ components continued to be used until the Karosa factories began manufacturing their own buses with self-supporting bodies in 1967.

crisis

In 1992 LIAZ was converted from a state-owned company into a public limited company. In 1995, Škoda acquired the majority of shares with a 52.4% stake and changed the name to Škoda LIAZ as. In the following years, LIAZ had to struggle with various problems. The company was not profitable because the management was unable to restructure the company according to private sector aspects. Too many employees, outdated means of production and no new products were just some of the reasons for the decline. In addition, the Western European commercial vehicle manufacturers pushed their way into the market. LIAZ lost more and more market shares. Therefore the company was restructured from 1997 - the company Truck International as was founded, the newly founded Jablonec engine plant Škoda Motory as became one of its subsidiaries. LIAZ had to file for bankruptcy in 1998, but this was lifted after two weeks. But then the share capital was reduced and the search for a foreign cooperation partner began. The most important interested party was DaimlerChrysler .

On July 12, 2000, however, the Slovak Sipox Holding became the new majority owner and the company was then renamed LIAZ Sipox SpA as . It is not clear why this happened as the holding company did not have the financial resources to keep production going. The employees owed their wages and the producers the energy costs.

On February 28, 2002, Škoda Motory was renamed Jamot as . Jamot had to file for bankruptcy on June 17, 2002 . The last LIAZ truck was manufactured on September 1st, 2003. It was a support vehicle for the Martin Macik Dakar Rally team, which was manufactured in the Mnichovo Hradiště plant . It was the 111,154 vehicle. After that, the LIAZ factory gates were finally closed.

New start under Tedom sro

In May 2003 the company Tedom sro acquired the Jamot complex including the complete know-how for engine production. The company produced buses for local public transport under the brand name Tedom . In 2006 Tedom Truck sro was spun off in order to bring the traditional brand LIAZ back onto the market. She presented a further development of the last LIAZ models under the new brand name Fox. In this context, LPG engines were also developed. However, Tedom Trucks did not develop as expected in the following years. At the annual general meeting on October 30, 2009, the shareholders decided to convert Tedom Truck into the Engines division of Tedom sro on January 1, 2010. This division is currently producing engines for Tedom buses, commercial vehicles from other brands and stationary engines for applications such as combined heat and power plants , generators and pumps . According to the manufacturer, Tedom motors can also be used as a replacement for LIAZ motors.

New establishment under the Czechoslovak Group

At the end of 2017, LIAZ Trucks was founded under the Czechoslovak Group , which also owns 65% of the shares in Tatra and Avia . It is planned to offer trucks under the name LIAZ again in the future.
