Liao Taizu

Liao Taizu or Yelü Yi ( Sinised ) or Abaoji ( Chinese  耶律 阿保機 , Pinyin Yēlǜ Ābǎojī , also Apaoka Khan; * 872 ; † 926 ) was a chief of the nomadic Yila tribe within the Kitan people , who live in the northeast of today's interior Mongolia lived.

Elected as Khagan for a period of three years , Abaoji refused to resign at the end of his term of office and proclaimed himself king of the newly created Khagan Empire. After the collapse of the Tang Dynasty in 907, Aboaji founded its own dynasty in the style of the Chinese imperial dynasties and rose to become emperor in 916 . He divided his followers into ordos (combat units, similar to a horde ), with 12 ordos forming an administrative district. He started in the year 924 an offensive westwards, it defeated the Kyrgyz in Mongolia, then waved to Gansu toSubjugate Uyghurs , Tanguts and Tuyuhun . In 926, the Korean state of Balhae (Parhae) in what is now northeastern China and North Korea was subjugated.

Abaoji was a promoter of the Sinization of his tribe and initiated the building of monasteries and temples of Buddhism , Daoism and Confucianism . He founded several cities, such as B. Shangjing, the ruins of which are preserved in Chifeng County . He also moved the capital Dongjing to the capital of the Bohai Empire , which was fortified. His son Déguāng gave him the title Liao Taizu posthumously .
