Ship data

The gunboats Zaire and Liberal

The Liberal was next to her sister ship Zaire one of the two boats Zaire class. Both gunboats were built in England. They had a displacement of 558  t , were 42.56 m long, 7.75 m wide and had a draft of 3.43 m. The steam engine had an output of 500 hp.

history

The ship was mainly used in the colonies of Angola , Mozambique , Portuguese India , Ajudá , São Tomé and Príncipe and Macau .

In 1897 the Liberal was used against the Namarrais and Gaza in Mozambique .

The Liberal was lost at the Angolan Ambriz after being stranded there on June 22, 1910. All persons on board, including the Governor General Colonel José Augusto A. Roçadas and a combat unit that was to be stationed south of Ambriz, could be rescued by the steamer Vilhena . The transporter África , which actually served as a depot ship in Luanda , then picked up the rescued.

The Liberal was stranded several times before, but without major damage; for example in March 1902 at Baixo de Pinda , in the north of the coast of Mozambique, and in October of the same year again on the geyser bank , northeast of Madagascar .
