The Liburnija was a ferry of the Croatian shipping company Jadrolinija , which entered service in 1965 and could also be used for cruises . The ship had a lifespan of fifty years and was scrapped in Turkey in 2015 .

history

The Liburnija was built under construction number 582 at De Merwede in Hardinxveld-Giessendam and launched on March 16, 1965. On July 2, 1965, she was handed over to her owner Jadrolinija and put into service in August 1965 in the ferry service between Yugoslavia , Greece and Italy . The ship could carry up to 700 passengers and 110 cars. Since it was equipped with cabins for a total of 182 passengers, it could also be used for cruises.

In November 1971 the Liburnija went on a cruise to South America , which took the ship from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Guyana , Chile , Ecuador , Honduras , Mexico and Jamaica . In 1972 it returned to normal liner service.

In the 1980s, the Liburnija ran regular liner services along the entire, at that time Yugoslavian Adriatic coast. The line ran from Rijeka in the north via Split and Korčula to Dobrovnik in the south.

In December 1991, the Liburnija led the Libertas 2 convoy : during the siege of Dubrovnik , civilian ships supplied the population and refugees staying in the city with food.

From December 28, 2002 to January 1, 2003 the Liburnija was used for a New Year's Eve cruise from Rijeka to Dubrovnik . In 2005 the ship switched to the route from Split to Vis . In the following years, the Liburnija was used on various routes off the coast of Croatia before it was launched in Mali Lošinj in September 2012 .

In May 2013, the ship returned to liner service and was used on the route from Rijeka via Split, Stari Grad , Korčula and Sobra to Dubrovnik, on which it was already in service a year before it was temporarily out of service.

In March 2015 the Liburnija was retired after almost fifty years of service and sold to Turkey for scrapping. On April 6, 2015, the ship arrived at the scrapping yard in Aliağa , where it was dismantled in the following weeks.
