Lichtenauer Mineralquellen is a Saxon beverage manufacturer based in Lichtenau near Chemnitz . The limited liability company was founded in 1990 as a subsidiary of the Hessian company Hassia Mineralquellen . Lichtenauer Mineralquellen is by its own account the leading East German well brand. The best- known brands are Lichtenauer and Margon .

history

In the summer of 1990, the then Hassia & Luisen Mineralquellen (now Hassia Mineralquellen ) took over a 40-year-old well operation from GDR times with two mineral springs and also opened up further springs in the Erzgebirge valley on the edge of Lichtenau. Hassia built a new well within nine months, and production started in July 1991. The former workforce was reduced from around 300 to 50 employees.

According to the manufacturer, the Lichtenau mineral water comes from 140 meters deep wells. In the first year, a beverage volume of 22 million liters was sold. In 1994 the production and storage areas were expanded by 8,000 square meters, while annual sales exceeded 100 million liters for the first time.

After Hassia bought up the traditional Margon source in Burkhardswalde in 2005 and sealed it at the end of the year, the subsidiary in Lichtenau took over the brand name for water from a previously unused source there. In the same year, Hassia bought Vita Cola in Schmalkalden in Thuringia (today owned by the Hassia subsidiary Thüringer Waldquell Mineralbrunnen ) - the brand has also been bottled at the Lichtenau site since then.

In March 2018, Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer was allowed to fill the 4 billionth bottle in Lichtenau.

According to its own information, the company employed around 225 people in 2020, including 14 apprentices .

Production capacity and market position

Every year around 170 million liters of Lichtenauer , Margon and Vita Cola beverages are delivered to wholesalers, food retailers, discounters and restaurants. The average daily filling quantity is 700,000 bottles. The company's maximum production capacity is around 1,000,000 bottles per day.

Sales in 2019 were over 54.5 million euros.

Lichtenau mineral water is marketed in Saxony, Thuringia , Saxony-Anhalt , Brandenburg , Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . Lichtenauer is one of the leading mineral water brands in Eastern Germany. Lichtenauer is also the market leader in the “flavored mineral water” segment in eastern Germany.

Awards

In 2015 and 2016 all mineral waters of the Lichtenauer brand were awarded the "Golden Prize" of the German Agricultural Society (DLG). In 2019, Lichtenau Mineralwaters received the "Prize for Long-Term Product Quality" for the second time from the DLG. The mineral waters "Medium" and "Lively" carry the Öko-Test seal "Very good".
