content

Joe Lieberman's wife recently died and has found it difficult to find his way around ever since. When he meets a woman he is attracted to, Shaleen turns out to be a prostitute. After appreciating their company, a relationship develops between the two of them that leads to Joe becoming a regular customer of Shaleen and even taking them to Hawaii when he is on vacation there.

When Joe wants to buy a condominium, he meets the real estate agent Kate, a beautiful woman for whom he quickly develops romantic feelings. With Kate married, Joe looks for a way to get her to give up on her husband. On the side, however, he continues his relationship with Shaleen undeterred, which involves complicated love entanglements, especially since he devises a diabolical plan to achieve his goal.

Production, background

The film was produced by Chanticleer Films Production and distributed by World Movies.

The author of the template Kinsella knew nothing about the filming of his short story by Christine Lahti. It wasn't until the film won an Oscar that he found out about it. It was not featured in the credits of the film, nor was it mentioned by Christine Lahti in her acceptance speech. Variety apologized to him in a full-page advertisement.

The film was shown in Brazil under the title A Paixão Segundo Lieberman , in Portugal under the title Lieberman Apaixonado and in Sweden under the title Änkemannen och kärleken .

criticism

VPRO Cinema spoke of a mercilessly romantic satire about the male-female relationship that comes very unexpectedly. Lahti is very good at her directorial debut, the script of which was subtly and originally written by Polly Platt.

Sky Cinema believed that the actors did their part perfectly, as one would expect, given that the film was made by an actress. The script by Polly Platt was also praised for being delicious, bizarre and amusing. The film deserved to win the Oscars.
