Lilium Eupetes is a kind of Asian section of the genus of lilies ( Lilium ). The epiphytic species is only known from North Vietnam . It was first described in 2008.

description

Lilium eupetes is an epiphytic, perennial , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of up to 45 centimeters. The round onion has a diameter of around 2.5 centimeters and is composed of yellowish-white, egg-shaped-club-shaped or elongated-round scales, at their outer end they are pointed. The roots arise at the base of the upright, bare, green stem .

The 17 to 19 alternately arranged, only short stalked leaves are lanceolate or narrow-elliptical, 5 to 6.5 (rarely from 3) centimeters long and 10 to 16 millimeters wide. Except for the reddish colored central rib, they are light green, bare on both sides and with entire margins. One to three small, conical bulbils often sit in the axils of the upper leaves , while the leaves turn downwards in a circle during wilting, and when the leaf falls off, the bulbils remain on them.

The usually single, rarely in pairs, nodding and bell- to star-shaped flowers are on a chestnut-brown flower stalk. The bracts are chestnut-red throughout, only greenish on the outer sides of the tips of the outer and on the central rib of the inner. The outer bracts are 4 inches long and 1.6 inches wide, egg-shaped, lanceolate, boat-shaped and finely papilous on the surface . They taper towards the outer end and are slightly bent back. The inner bracts are 4 centimeters long and around 1 centimeter wide, the nectar groove is papilose and greenish-yellow.

The stamens denied Flowercentre away and are shorter than the pen , the approximately 16 mm long filaments are bright red and bare, the dust bag 11 to 12 millimeters long. The connective is red, the pollen is orange.

The ovary is cylindrical in shape, shiny, bright red and slightly shorter than the anthers. The chestnut-red style is slightly curved, the stigma is white and only slightly wider than the style.

The fruit is a light brown capsule , 3 centimeters long and around 1.5 centimeters wide, the stem stands upright when ripe. The numerous seeds are disc-shaped, light brown and measure around 2 millimeters in diameter.

distribution

The plants are found in the North Vietnamese province of Lào Cai at altitudes between 1900 and 2000 meters on moss substrates in tall trees and forks.

More detailed information on the locations is currently not given, as illegal looting by Chinese collection teams is feared.

Systematics

The species was discovered by Bleddyn and Sue Wynn-Jones in 2006 and first described by Julian Mark Hugh Shaw in 2008 . The type epithet is derived from the Greek and means something like "good flying". This refers to the mechanism of expansion of the axillary bulbs, which remain firmly on the leaf, which forms a ring during withering, and can be carried far by the falling leaf.

Closely related is Lilium arboricola , the otherwise only known epiphytic lily species.
