Lilium souliei is a species from the genus of the lilies ( Lilium ) in the Asian section .
The species was first described by Adrien René Franchet as Fritillaria souliei , only Joseph Robert Sealy recognized that it is not a plant from the genus Fritillaria , but a very unusual lily.
Lilium souliei is rare in culture and so far has not been used for breeding hybrids , although its coloring is unusual and beautiful.

Lilium souliei reaches a height of 10 cm to 30 cm, and thus belongs to the dwarf lilies. The stem is hard and straight. The leaves are 0.6 to 1.5 cm narrow and elliptical, lanceolate or linear, between 3 cm and 6 cm long and sometimes papillae . A total of 5 to 8 leaves are distributed over the stem.
The plant blooms from June to July with a single bell-shaped, nodding bloom. The hermaphroditic flower is threefold, with six identical 2.5 to 3.5 cm long bloom cladding sheets ( tepals ). The basic color of the flower is dark purple-red to mahogany-brown without points. In the flower there are three carpels and six stamens . The anthers are dark purple and the filaments sloping together. The nectaries are not papillary. The seeds ripen in 1.5 cm to 2 cm oval seed pods from August to October .
The bulbs are small, narrow-oval and reach a diameter of about 1.5 cm, they are covered with white lanceolate scales.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24.
distribution
Lilium souliei is found on grassy slopes and in bushes at altitudes between 1200 and 1400 m above sea level, but also rise to 3900 m.
The species is endemic and found in the provinces of Sichuan , Yunnan, and southeast of Xizang in the People's Republic of China .
