Limodore ( Limodorum ) is a plant genus from the family of the orchid (Orchidaceae). The genus was established by the botany professor Georg Rudolf Böhmer in 1760.

The origin and meaning of the generic name is not clearly clarified. An etymological explanation points to the Greek words λειμών (leimon) = the meadow, pasture and δώρον (doron) = the gift. This combination of words “meadow present” is listed in Rudolf Schlechter's standard work Die Orchideen , 3rd edition, 1992. The type species is Limodorum abortivum (L.) Sw. For a long time this genus was regarded as monotypical .

The genus has a Mediterranean distribution area and is only represented in Central Europe by the violet thing ( Limodorum abortivum ).

description

The plants are mycoparasites (see also parasitic plants ) with a short rhizome . The stems are covered with sheathed scale leaves. Green leaves are missing.

The inflorescence is elongated and many-flowered. The bracts are longer than the ovary. The flower lip is two-part. The front lip is concave with a curved, wavy edge. The flowers have a long rudimentary spur. The pollinia are sessile and share a common, bare adhesive disc. The above-average fruit set can be explained with both allogamy and autogamy . Also cleistogamy occurs. The fruit capsules are large, stalked and upright.
