Lemonade Joe (original title: Limonádový Joe aneb Koňská opera ) is a parody of western films produced in Czechoslovakia in 1964 . Oldřich Lipský directed; the film was shown for the first time in theaters in the GDR on August 28, 1964 and was also shown in West Germany in January 1966. The script is based on the novel and play of the same name by Jiří Brdečka .

Lemonade Joe, dressed all in white, comes to Stetson City and makes sure that the constantly beating and whiskey-drinking population gets to know the drink Kolaloka, which he keeps drinking. When Mr. Goodman, another newcomer with missionary intentions, opens a Kolaloka saloon, it is a complete success. Mr. Goodman's daughter, who likes to sing, also ensures that the old saloon is only inhabited by spiders. When a villain arrives, he kills the sheriff, bans Kolaloka and lets morals go to waste. But lemonade Joe makes sure that everything is back in order and that the Kolaloka Group is guaranteed good sales.

criticism

“Entertaining parody of the Wild West, its films and capitalist ways of life. Imaginative and versatile musical grotesques with some current allusions at the time of production, ”is the verdict of the lexicon of international film . The New York Times particularly praised the clever structure of the film, which the director created with remarkable skill.

Lemonade Joe won the Golden Clam at the 1964 San Sebastian Film Festival.

Remarks

The figure of Limonadovný Joe was created around 1940; he appeared in a few short stories for the magazine Ahoj . Later, the author Brdečka developed a play from this, which in turn inspired a puppet film. Some of the trick effects in this film, Arie prerie , were adapted for this real- life version .

The film is a parody of silent Wild West films interspersed with pieces of music, inked in color and with subverted fight scenes.
