Linda Howard (table tennis player)
Linda Howard (* around 1956) is an English table tennis player who became European double champion in 1976.
Career
Linda Howard achieved her first international success at the European Youth Championships in 1973, where she won the title in mixed with Desmond Douglas .
She won twelve titles at the national English championships , namely seven in doubles and five in mixed. At the Commonwealth Championships for adults she was first six times in the 1970s, namely in 1973 and 1975 with the English team, in 1975 in doubles with Jill Hammersley and in mixed with Desmond Douglas and in 1979 in doubles with Carole Knight and in mixed with Jimmy Walker . From 1973 to 1981 Howard was nominated four times for world championships and in 1975 he finished fifth in team competition.
She took part in European championships five times . Here she achieved the greatest success in 1976 when she prevailed in doubles with Jill Hammersley in the final against Alica Grofová / Dana Dubinová (ČSSR) and became European champion. Silver she won yet at the same EM with the English team and 1980 in mixed doubles with Desmond Douglas, bronze in doubles with Jill Hammersley in 1980 and 1982 . After the EM in 1982 she ended her international career.
In the ITTF world rankings , Linda Howard finished 24th in mid-1976.
Around 1979 she played for the German club Post SV Düsseldorf .
Private
Linda Howard initially worked as a sporting goods seller in London. In June 1979 she married the English table tennis player Nicky Jarvis . Their son Matt Jarvis (* 1986) is a well-known soccer player. Linda's sister Susan - now Sue Henderson - won the 1973 Commonwealth Championships. Linda and Nicky Jarvis have been running a table tennis equipment store called "Jarvis Sport" since 1983.
