Matthew Thomas "Matt" Jarvis (born May 22, 1986 in Middlesbrough ) is an English football player . The winger , who can be used in both midfield outside positions - preferably on the left - was trained at lower-class Gillingham FC and has been under contract with the current second division Norwich City since the 2015/16 season .

Athletic career

Matthew Jarvis was born in Middlesbrough town and is part of a sports-loving family. Both parents - Nicky and Linda Howard - were successful table tennis players , each number 1 in the British rankings in their active careers and then started a table tennis equipment business called "Jarvis Sport", which they relocated to Guildford in the south of England in 1986 . But son Matthew decided early for the football and tried initially in the youth section of the London club Millwall FC . There, however, he was let go again; instead he tried his luck in Kent at Gillingham FC . At the age of 17 he made his debut as a substitute for the second division on November 4, 2003 against AFC Sunderland , which had been favored by a wave of flu at the "Gills" and ended with a 1: 3 home defeat. The second mission followed on January 24, 2004 on the occasion of the 1: 3 defeat in the FA Cup at Burnley FC and suddenly between March and the beginning of May 2004 - before his 18th birthday - he found himself permanently in the role of supplementary player in the first team again. In addition, Jarvis played a successful 2003/04 season in the youth team of Gillingham FC and advanced to the last sixteen in the FA Youth Cup . This development step was rewarded with the first professional contract under coach Andy Hessenthaler , which included a term of three years.

The path from "Joker" to regular player followed in the 2004/05 season, when Jarvis completed a total of 30 league games between January and February 2005 despite an injury-related break after a groin operation. Against his later club Wolverhampton Wanderers he had it on October 30, 2004 scored his first goal to win 1-0; nevertheless, the "breakthrough year" ended disappointingly with the descent of the Gills in the third-rate Football League One . Jarvis remained loyal to his club in the third division, developed from a regular to a key player and achieved the best result of the season of his career to date with seven goals. Among his strengths, he mostly played out as "right-footer" on the left wing position, especially with his speed with which he the respective opposing belonged in this season full-back used to play off to sprint or those with short body deceptions (a skill that only few players was available in the third highest league in England in a similar quality). Despite his small body height of just over 1.70 meters, Jarvis also showed above-average head-ball strength. In the middle of the 2006/07 season, Gillingham FC offered their perhaps best talent a new contract, which they claim to have been more lucrative than any other player of their age in Gillingham FC history. Jarvis turned down the offer as well as an early move during the winter break to second division Plymouth Argyle or on loan in March to third division competitor Nottingham Forest . Negotiating poker continued at the end of the season and after a failed offer from second division club Charlton Athletic and a further improved offer from FC Gillingham, Jarvis, who had been elected "Team of the Year" in third-rate Football League One in April 2007, decided on the Wolverhampton Wanderers. There he signed a two-year contract, with the option of an extension for another season.

His debut with the "Wolves" was delayed due to hip and groin problems during the preparation for the season until October 20, 2007, when he came against Charlton Athletic in the 88th minute for his first brief appearance. After full regeneration, he played his way into the regular formation and ultimately made 27 competitive appearances in the 2007/08 season. Also at the beginning of the 2008/09 promotion season , Jarvis suffered an Achilles tendon injury that put him out of action for six weeks; he returned to the team on December 6, 2008. In February 2009 Jarvis extended his contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers until the end of the 2011/12 season.

On August 24, 2012 Jarvis moved within the league to West Ham United . He signed a five-year contract with the London club until June 30, 2017.
