Linton Chorley Hope ( April 18, 1863 - December 20, 1920 ) was a British sailor and marine engineer .
Career
Linton Hope participated in the Olympics in 1900 in Paris , where he as a crew member of he designed in three competitions Scotia took. In the joint race, the Scotia was the first boat to cross the finish line two minutes before the Cinderella from Germany, with which Hope as well as skipper Algernon Maudslay and his other crew members John Gretton and ship owner Lorne Currie became Olympic champions . In the boat class 0.5 to 1 ton , they achieved another Olympic victory in the first race, while they missed another podium finish in the second race, finishing fourth.
He ran his own company, Linton Hope & Company , which designed new boats and traded in ships. In addition to numerous yachts, Hope also designed several flying boats . During the First World War he was called up in 1915 as a lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve for service in the Royal Navy and in 1915 he designed the AD Flying Boat , which was built by Supermarine , for the Air Department of the British Admiralty . The hull design was also used for other flying boats. He reached his highest rank in the military as Squadron Leader of the Royal Air Force .
Hope was married with at least one son, Eustace Hope, who died as Group Captain of the Royal Air Force in France in August 1941 during World War II .
