Lionel Townsend Crawshaw

Lionel Townsend Crawshaw (* 1864 in Warmsworth near Doncaster , South Yorkshire , † 1949 in Bath , Somerset ) was a British painter , watercolorist and etcher .

Life

Crawshaw, son of the businessman Edward Crawshaw, attended the University of Cambridge after school , where he was trained as a solicitor . He then turned to painting and studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1889/1890 . There he went to Heinrich Lauenstein's elementary class . For further training he went to Karlsruhe and to the Académie Colarossi in Paris . For a time he lived in Doncaster and Edinburgh , and also in Whitby and Droitwich Spa . He exhibited his works at the Royal Academy of Arts , the Royal Scottish Academy and the New English Art Club , among others . From his first marriage to Juliette Menut from Belle-Île ( Brittany ), his son Harold Crawshaw emerged. The flower painter Frances Crawshaw (* 1876) was his second wife, with whom he lived in Yorkshire until the early 1930s , later in Trusham, Devon . Crawshaw is considered a member of the Staithes Group , an artist group that worked between 1894 and 1909 in the fishing village of Staithes on the Yorkshire coast.
