The Liptovská Mara dam is a reservoir in Slovakia . It dams the river Waag west of Liptovský Mikuláš . It was named after the village of Liptovská Mara, which was sunk in the reservoir .
The reservoir was created between 1965 and 1975. The water area is 22 km², its maximum depth is 45 meters. With a storage volume of 360 million m³ of water, it is the largest water reservoir (by volume) in Slovakia. Several villages (including Liptovská Sielnica , Paludza , Parížovce , Nežitovce , Zádiel, Dechtáre , Sokolče , Čemice , Vŕbie , Ráztoky and the eponymous Liptovská Mara ) were completely abandoned for the construction; Parts of places Bobrovník , Liptovský Trnovec and Benice were flooded. Some buildings in these villages, u. a. the early Gothic church of Liptovská Mara were transferred to the Liptov Village Museum . To this end, the main line Žilina – Košice and the main road from Žilina to Poprad were relocated and a section of today's D1 motorway was built (opened in 1977).
The main function of the reservoir is flood protection , but it also serves to generate electrical energy , which generates an output of 200 MW from 4 turbines . Two of the four machines are designed as pump turbines . The reservoir of the dam serves as the upper basin, the reservoir of a dam somewhat downstream as the lower basin of the pumped storage power plant . The use for tourism and local recreation is currently relatively limited. There is a recreation center at Liptovský Trnovec with the nearby Tatralandia Aquapark .
The Ratkovie peninsula and the surrounding water area is a protected area. The Havránok archaeological site is located on the west bank of the Bobrovník village .
