Lisa Lake
Lisa See (born February 18, 1955 in Paris , France ) is an American writer and journalist .
Life
Lisa See was born in Paris in 1955 to American parents. Her mother is the writer Carolyn See . She spent most of her childhood in Los Angeles , where she spent a lot of time in Chinatown with her grandparents. In 1979 she graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a bachelor's degree . From 1983 to 1996 she was a correspondent for the US West Coast for the industry magazine Publishers Weekly . She also wrote for magazines such as Vogue , Self and More . As a curator , she oversaw several exhibitions dealing with intercultural relations between China and the USA .
See debuted as a writer with "On Gold Mountain" in 1995. The story, which is semi-biographically based on her great-grandfather Fong See, became an international bestseller and marked Lisa See's breakthrough as an author. She received several awards including the New York Times Notable Book Award . The book appeared the following year after a translation by Thomas Pfeiffer and Helmut Dierlamm with the German title Auf dem golden Berg. The story of a Chinese family in the Munich publishing house Droemer Knaur . For her second novel, published in 1997, she received a nomination for the Edgar Allan Poe Award . The book was published in Germany under the title “Die Rote Klinge” as well as under the title “In a network of lotus flowers”.
After a production by Wayne Wang and starring Li Bingbing , Jun Ji-hyun , Vivian Wu and Hugh Jackman, the film adaptation of See's fifth novel of the same name was released in 2011 with The Silk Fan .
In 2001 Lisa See was named "National Woman of the Year" by the Organization of Chinese-American Women, and in autumn 2003 she received the "Chinese American Museum's History Makers Award". She currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband and their two sons .
