Lisa Simone (born on 12. September 1962 in Mount Vernon , New York , as Lisa Celeste Stroud is) an American jazz singer and musical actress .

Career

Lisa Simone was born in Mount Vernon, New York, in 1962. She is the daughter of Nina Simone and her husband and manager Andrew Stroud. She grew up with her aunt Betty Shabazz . When Simone was ten, her parents divorced, and she moved to Barbados with her mother in 1973 . At the age of 13 she attended a private school in Switzerland. At the age of 15 she led a vocal quintet in a church where she sang the solos. In between, she lived for a year with her father in New York City and with her aunt in Hudson (New York) . From 1982 to 1993 Simone served as a technician with the US Air Force in Frankfurt am Main . There she was discovered as a singer by Joan Faulkner and performed occasionally in the region. After leaving the army in 1993, she devoted herself entirely to singing.

She initially worked as a background singer on Broadway . She made her international stage debut in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber. In 1996 she sang in the Broadway musical Rent . In 1998, Simone a break from acting and appeared on the album Here's the Deal of Liquid Soul with. In 1999 she was brought on stage by her mother at the Guinness Blues Festival in Northern Ireland to perform together. From the beginning of 2002 to mid-2003 she played the title role in the musical Aida . In 2007 she played the role of Fantine in Les Misérables . In 2014 Simone released her first studio album, All Is Well . Her second album as a solo artist followed in 2016 with My World .

She is married and has a daughter.
