Lise London (born February 15, 1916 as Lise Ricol in Montceau-les-Mines , France , † March 31, 2012 in Paris ) was a French communist and a member of the Resistance .

Life

Lise Ricol was born into a poor family of Spanish immigrants. Her father was a miner. He suffered from silicosis and was a militant communist .

London was married to Auguste Delaune's first marriage . As a militant communist, she was sent to Moscow by the French Communist Party in 1934 . There she met the Czech Artur London , whom she married in 1935. In the Spanish Civil War she took part in the development of the International Brigades . In 1938 she returned to Paris pregnant . In the Second World War after the campaign in the West and the German occupation of France , she joined the Resistance in July 1940 . She advanced to Capitaine and was arrested by the French police in 1942, extradited to the Germans and in 1944 deported to the Ravensbrück concentration camp and finally to the Hasag Leipzig external command of the Buchenwald concentration camp . During the evacuation march in April 1945, she managed to escape.

In 1949 she went to Prague with her two children , where her husband had meanwhile become Deputy Foreign Minister. In 1951 he was arrested as part of a Stalinist purge and tried in the Slansky Trial in 1952. In 1963 the London family returned to France.

Lise London has received the Legion of Honor officer degree for her services . In 2000 she took part in the Congress of the French Communist Party. In an interview with El País in 2011 , she stated that she tore up her membership card and left the French Communist Party, but remained a communist.
