Former Flossenbürg concentration camp The former concentration camp comprises three functionally and spatially interconnected areas: the prisoner and SS camp, the SS settlement (see former Flossenbürg concentration camp, sub-area SS settlement) and the quarry at Bocksbühl (see former Flossenbürg concentration camp, sub-area quarry). The concentration camp was founded in Flossenbürg in April / May 1938 to mine the granite in the local quarries, which supplied the stone material for the construction of the monumental buildings of the Third Reich, for example the Nazi party rally grounds in Nuremberg. The prisoners, who in SS terminology were made up of “anti-social” and “criminals”, were initially occupied with building the camp in addition to the quarry work. The occupancy and function of the camp changed significantly, influenced by the course of the Second World War. From 1940 the workforce consisted primarily of Poles and Czechs, as well as political prisoners. In October 1941, a special camp for Soviet prisoners of war was set up. Starting at the end of 1942, stone quarrying was increasingly withdrawn in favor of aircraft production by Messerschmitt GmbH, which produced parts for the Bf 109 fighter aircraft there . In 1942, satellite camps were founded, which by 1945 had reached around 100. According to the inhuman principle of "extermination through work" in the Flossenbürg camp, over 30,000 of the more than 100,000 prisoners were killed. The events of the post-war period were decisive for the structural tradition of the camp. After serving as an internment camp for German prisoners of war, mostly SS men, for a short time, then from 1946 as a camp for "displaced persons", in 1947 it became a camp for refugees from Silesia, East Prussia and the Sudetenland. On the initiative of former prisoners, the conversion of the eastern part of the prisoner camp into a memorial site with, among other things, an atonement chapel and a pyramid of ashes began as early as 1946 . In the mid-1950s, a new housing estate was built for the refugees instead of the camp barracks on the northern slope of the former camp. Despite these demolitions and later structural changes, the original layout of the concentration camp is clearly visible in large parts. Quite a few structures from the prisoner and SS camps as well as the terracing of the area have been preserved. The retaining walls of the former rows of barracks and a large part of the staircases are on the north slope. The roll call area is framed by the ground-floor gable roof buildings of the prisoner's kitchen and the laundry, washing and disinfection building. A part of the detention building with a courtyard wall has been preserved on the southern slope. Remains of other barracks such as the former prisoner camp entrance have come to light during excavations. In addition to the former SS casino building, the former commandant's building, which dominated the entrance area to the warehouse, should also be emphasized. In the eastern area of the prisoner camp there are three of the earlier watchtowers and the crematorium with its ramp. This area was redesigned into a memorial with the creation of the so-called Valley of Death and the Atonement Chapel and thus forms an important testimony to the culture of remembrance of the post-war period. Former Flossenbürg concentration camp The former concentration camp comprises three functionally and spatially interconnected areas: the prisoner and SS camp (see former Flossenbürg concentration camp, sub-area camp), the SS settlement (see former Flossenbürg concentration camp, sub-area SS settlement) and the quarry at Bocksbühl. Similar to the former prisoner and SS camp, the quarry area is still largely characterized by the terracing work of the prisoners. Several functional buildings have been preserved there, from the administration building of the SS company DEST (Deutsche Erd- und Steinwerke GmbH) , the forge and warehouse building, the machine house, the garage construction to the wooden barracks for stone carving. There are also explosives chambers and numerous remains of the foundations of the various hall buildings spread across the site. D-3-74-122-56 BW

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
