Ensembles in Vohburg

Ulrich-Steinberger-Platz ensemble

File number: E-1-86-158-3

The ensemble includes Ulrich-Steinberger-Platz with its surrounding buildings and the houses on Donaustraße that form the western end of the square. The largely preserved plaza comes mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries on the basis of medieval floor plans, enhanced by the remote castle ruins with the baroque parish church of St. Petrus. Ulrich-Steinberger-Platz is the central location of the city. Vohburg lies on a peninsula, which culminates in an isolated mountain with a relatively extensive plateau, between the small Danube in the south and the Danube in the north.

Vohburg is first mentioned around 895 as a "larger fortified courtyard", in front of which a settlement soon developed. Since the 9th century, the castle complex and the village became increasingly important as a parish seat. The gentlemen on the Vohburg came from the families of the Staufer, Diepoldinger and Wittelsbach family. The Danube crossing, with the road leading from Ingolstadt via Großmehring to Kelheim and Regensburg, encouraged the establishment of retail, commercial and hostel businesses. One of the Bavarian dukes from the period from 1204 to 1310 is assumed to be the city's founder. The loss of the town charter after a short time is associated with the second destruction of the castle (first in 1105 by Emperor Heinrich IV) and the razing of the town fortifications by King Ludwig the Bavarian in 1316. Since the beginning of the 15th century, Vohburg had the appearance of a town again through the reconstruction of the castle and the city wall. With the final destruction of the castle in 1641 by the Swedes in the Thirty Years' War, Vohburg lost its importance. In 1952 the market town was raised to the status of town again.

Michael Wening : Vohburg around 1700

The medieval layout of the square is an irregular triangle, over which the Donaustraße, the trade route from Ingolstadt to Regensburg, runs. The buildings that architecturally frame the square date mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. The different building widths, storeys and gable heights of the partly eaves and partly gable houses convey the impression of diversity. This is intensified by the irregular plaza, which results in a staggered relocation of the houses. Overall, the buildings show the architectural proportions of a bourgeois small town. Architectural dominants are the former parish church of St. Andrew standing north of the square with its tower crowned with a pointed helmet, now the town hall, as well as the baroque Catholic branch church of St. Antonius, built in 1726-28, which protrudes semicircularly from the western square wall. There is also a Marian column and a war memorial on the square.

Ensemble Burghof Vohburg an der Donau

File number: E-1-86-158-1

The ensemble encompasses the townscape-defining ruins of the Vohburg, some of which date from the 13th century, on the elevated castle hill with the baroque parish church of St. Petrus and the nursing palace built in 1721.

Vohburg Castle, keep

The Vohburg was first mentioned by name around 895 as a fortified court complex and the center of power of the noble Pernardus de Vohaburch. Belonging to the official property of the Bavarian Count Palatine since the 10th century, the Vohburg was passed on to the Diepoldinger, Margraves of Cham and Nabburg, as heir of the Rapotons in 1099. Their Wittelsbach heirs expanded the castle complex and Duke Ludwig the Strict had it evidently expanded in 1255 as the administrative center of his entire territory.

With the second destruction of the castle and the loss of the center function including customs post in 1316 in the brotherly dispute, the decline of the Vohburg began, but in 1431–35 it was once again used as a residence for Duke Albrecht III. and Agnes Bernauer served. During the Thirty Years War in 1641 the castle was finally destroyed by the Swedes.

Architectural dominants are the core of the 13th century, around 470 m long and irregularly following the course of the terrain, circular wall with a northern gate building, which also forms the ensemble boundary, furthermore the baroque parish church of St. Peter built in the courtyard with a slender west tower and onion dome Today's appearance goes back to the years 1820/23, as well as the two-storey caretaker's castle built in 1721 with a mansard hipped roof and the mighty keep, which was reconstructed in 1959 based on a historical model.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The monument property - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the monument atlas or the entry in the Bavarian monument list. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
