Ensemble Stadtplatz Geisenfeld

File number: E-1-86-122-1

The ensemble encompasses the Geisenfeld settlement core, which is essentially formed by the town square, Rathausstrasse, Marienplatz, church square and the cloister courtyard with the surrounding buildings.

Ensemble on the town square

Geisenfeld, located on the northern edge of the Hallertau, on the western bank of the Ilm Valley, was first mentioned in 1037. In the 11th century it was the center of an extensive rulership complex of the Counts of Ebersberg. With the transfer of Ebersberger's property to the Benedictine monastery in Geisenfeld, which they founded in 1030, the place became the center of the abbey's important manorial rule as a local market and craftsmen's settlement. Despite the extremely convenient location of the village, in which the road from Regensburg forks towards Munich and Augsburg, no long-distance market developed.

With the monastery bailiwick, the place came into the hands of the Wittelsbachers around 1130, who supported Geisenfeld in its development, especially during the time of the partial duchies in the 14th and 15th centuries. In 1310, it was first mentioned as a market. Economically, the place remained dependent on the monastery, which until its secularization in 1803 was the landlord of more than three quarters of all properties. The circular wall erected in the early 15th century finally determined the outline for the horseshoe-shaped extension of the village around the settlement core.

The town square, whose medieval, irregular floor plan is surrounded by two-storey buildings from the 17th to the early 20th century, is the center of Geisenfeld. Some of the buildings, which are large in cubature, have tail gables and document the prosperity of their former residents. Buildings dominating the space are the eaves-standing inn, which occupies the entire east side of the square, as well as the other inn located in the corner with a polygonal corner tower and curved gable, which forms a structural unit with the house at Stadtplatz 5, also with a curved gable. The west wall of the square is dominated by the rectory, a saddle roof building with a baroque tail gable built around 1752. The extensive eaves side building at Stadtplatz 11, on the corner of Maximilianstrasse and Augsburger Strasse, completes the square in the north-west.

Rathausstrasse, the north side of which is bordered by mostly two-storey gabled houses and on the south side by an annex building from Stadtplatz 3, connects the town square with Marienplatz. This is a street square running in a north-south direction with a triangular widening in the north. It is framed by mostly two-story, simple eaves summer houses from the 19th century.

The triangular church square and the cloister courtyard adjoin to the south. The dominant buildings here are the old town hall, built in 1626, as well as the present town hall, originally built as a boys' school and Schranne in 1874, in the middle of the church square. These buildings are dominated by the former Benedictine monastery church of the Assumption, now the Catholic parish church of St. Emmeram, with its western double tower facade, the north tower with a tent roof, the south tower with an octagonal upper floor, hood and lantern. To the south, the former Benedictine monastery, founded in 1030, is connected.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The monument property - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the monument atlas or the entry in the Bavarian monument list. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
