Evangelical Lutheran Parish Church of St. Martini | At the churchyard card |
The St. Martini Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church in the center of Stadthagen. It is characterized by Gothic style elements and connected to an attached princely mausoleum. A church at its current location is mentioned as early as 1230, but due to its small size it was demolished in 1318. Of this church, the 42.3 meter high tower, which dominates the entire cityscape, and part of the walling still exist today. The three-aisled Gothic hall church with three extensions comes from various construction periods in the Middle Ages. The ossuary built on the south side of the church in 1430 is now used as a boiler room and staircase to the church tower.

mausoleum | At the churchyard card |
The Prince's mausoleum at St. Martini's Church is a total work of art consisting of architecture, sculpture and painting, which is recognized as having international significance. The mausoleum planned by Prince Ernst von Holstein-Schaumburg († 1622) for himself, his wife Hedwig von Hessen-Kassel and his parents since 1607 and started in 1620 was completed by Hedwig a few years after his death. The design was created by Giovanni Maria Nosseni († 1620), the construction and interior decoration were done by Anton Boten. The 13 bronze sculptures and 6 bronze reliefs of the central monument are mature works by the important Dutch artist Adriaen de Vries - the only ones that can still be seen in their original context. The building and furnishings have been preserved in their original state and offer an authentic picture of the sense of style and worldview of a ruling prince between the Reformation and the Thirty Years' War in Protestant northern Germany.

Old Town Hall | At the market 1 card |
The old town hall in Stadthagen is an elongated former town hall built from Obernkirchen sandstone in the Weser Renaissance style. The old town hall now houses the registry office, tourist information, ballroom and restaurant.
The “Old Town Hall”, which dominates the market, is divided between the high front gables on the eaves side by two dwelling houses. Although it was not built until between 1595 and 1602, the motif of the “Welschen gable”, which already characterizes the early Renaissance building of the castle, is taken up again. Three bay windows are added to the unadorned structure, the crowns of which are formed by scrollwork, obelisks and vases. Warrior heads look down at the viewer from the central medallions. The very high-quality building sculpture comes from Arendt Robin, who also made the chimneys in the castle. The last extension was added in 1602 to the east gable with a two-storey hall. Its ornamentation takes up Robin's older motifs again, but not in the same artistic quality. A whale rib hangs under the middle bay window on the market side. A reminder of the time of the "Holland drivers", seasonal workers on Dutch herring catchers. Single monument according to Section 3.2 NDSchG |

The Schloss Stadthagen of the then ruling Counts and later Princely House of Schaumburg-Lippe was in the years 1535–1539 by Count Adolf XI. built in Stadthagen on the site of a previous plant. It was a moated castle built in 1224, which Count Adolf III. by Schaumburg in a clearing in the Dülwald.
The new construction of the palace from 1535 was planned and built by the master builder Jörg Unkair, who came from Lustnau near Tübingen and had previously worked at the Cistercian monastery in Bebenhausen. He chose the sandstone himself in the Bückeberg near Obernkirchen. The residential palace was designed as a spacious, square four-wing complex, the northwest corner of which remained open to the city. The dwarf houses and winged gables - Welsche Giebel - are similar to those of the Schelenburg near Osnabrück, which Unkair had previously built. But since in Stadthagen, unlike the Schelenburg, he did not have to take the remains of the castle from the Middle Ages into consideration, the castle not only looks friendly on the inside, but also on the outside. It was built as a purely residential palace without any military tasks. After completion in 1539, the Schaumburg state government moved in the following year; The tax and finance authorities also had their seat here. In 1608 the government and residence of the Schaumburg counts were relocated to Bückeburg. The castle later served as the widow's seat and residence of the Hereditary Prince. A comprehensive restoration took place in 1875. After the First World War, the castle became the property of the newly founded Free State of Schaumburg-Lippe in 1919, and of Lower Saxony since 1946. The castle is considered the oldest and most influential architectural monument of the Weser Renaissance in Lower Saxony. Single monument according to Section 3.2 NDSchG |

Probably together with the Johannishof leper home to the north, which is only documented in 1394, the St. John's Chapel was built in 1312 outside the walled city - about 250 meters from the Niederntor . It is a rectangular Gothic quarry stone hall church with a gable roof. The window slits, so-called hagioscopes (leprosy slits), on the north side were intended for lepers so that they could see the altar and the host during mass.
The leper home was converted into a poor house around 1500. The current building dates from the 17th century. It was renovated in the 1970s and converted into a studio and residential building. During the period of inflation, the St. John's Chapel was used as a mortuary. |

Jewish Cemetery | Seilerstrasse map |
The Jewish cemetery was laid out around 1822 as a replacement for an old cemetery that had been occupied since 1597 and was located "on the wall". In this old cemetery no stones were allowed to be placed on the graves, as the wall was also used by the citizens for walking and "Christian" eyes should not be offended.
After the Second World War , repair work was carried out on the cemetery in 1955/56, 1985 and 1994. Since 1960 it has been owned by the State Association of Jewish Communities of Lower Saxony . The city has been responsible for maintaining the cemetery since 1974. Constituent parts of a group according to Section 3.3 NDSchG |

Cancer Hagen
(Alt-) Krebshagen is one of the last typical Hagenhufen villages in Germany. Hagendörfer are elongated villages that were created through settlements along a path. The old farmsteads in Krebshagen are all on one side of the street. Behind the property there is mostly a stream, here in Krebshagen the Krebshäger Bach, officially the "Krumme Bach", which used to be used for drinking water and (even today in part) for service water, especially for cattle. The associated lands, the Hufen, are on both sides of the road in front of and behind the farms.
The farmhouses were built as Low German hall houses with a large entrance hallway (hallway door) and a final living area. This made it possible to drive the harvest wagons into the houses and then bring straw, hay, grain, etc. to the ground ("Böhne") through the skylight. Often you could drive out on the other side of the house. The stables for the cattle were often arranged to the right and / or left of the hallway. That brought warmth into the house in winter. On the gable sides, the roofs are drawn down as a half-hipped ("ham") and have the curves (round gables) typical of the Schaumburger Land.
According to old records, Krebshagen was created by clearing before 1319 (Wendthagen or, in the old days, “Wenethage”, our neighboring village, was built around 1200). It is believed that Wendthagen was founded from Bruchhof, which is probably the oldest settlement in our area. It cannot be ruled out that the first founding of Krebshagen also took place at this time, i.e. before 1319. At that time, individual settlers were assigned areas for reclamation. The name of the village has changed over time: around 1319 they wrote "Cropeshagen", 1382 "Crepeshagen", 1410 "Crepeshaghen", 1457 "Krepeshagen", 1550 "Krepshagenn", 1608 again "Krepeshagen", 1671 "Kreibshagen" , 1696 "Krepshagen" and today "Krebshagen".
