List of Governors of British North Borneo
The list of governors of British North Borneo includes the chief administrative officers appointed by the British Crown between the establishment of the North Borneo Chartered Company (1881) and the establishment of Malaysia (1963):
The first British governor of the region was William Hood Treacher in 1881. With the occupation of the region in 1941 and the capture and deportation of Governor Smith, North Borneo fell under Japanese administration for nearly four years. After the liberation, the British put Smith back at the head of the administration. In 1963, North Borneo became Sabah , a federal state of the newly founded Malaysia and was administered by the first " Yang di-Pertuan Negara " on September 16 .
