List of tunnels in Wuppertal
This list lists the most important traffic tunnel structures in the Wuppertal city area.
Due to its hilly topography, numerous tunnels had to be built in the 19th century, especially for the railway line of the " Wuppertal Northern Railway ". But also the federal highways , federal highways and state roads leading through the urban area require routes with flat elevation profiles for the unimpeded flow of traffic . Newer tunnel structures were also built for reasons of noise (enclosures) or nature conservation ( Burgholz tunnel ).
The Burgholz tunnel is the longest road tunnel in North Rhine-Westphalia in the urban area .
