The Scheetunnel is a 722 meter long, two-tube railway tunnel on the disused railway line Wuppertal-Wichlinghausen-Hattingen , the west tube of which is now used as a pedestrian and cycle path. It connects Sprockhövel - Schee with Wuppertal - Nachbarebreck . During the Second World War , aircraft parts were assembled in the east tunnel as part of the U relocation .

location

The tunnel passes under the Haßlinghauser Ridge , which is formed from sandstone and is 315 meters high at this point , on which the city limits from Wuppertal to Sprockhövel , the state road 432 and the federal highway 46 run. The ridge is also the watershed between the river systems of the Wupper and the Ruhr . The major part is in the Wuppertal urban area in the district of Nachbarebreck . The south portal is located south of the A 46, while the north portal is near the Schee train station . Above the tunnel there are golf courses to the north and south of the watershed .

The tunnel runs through the empty upper carbon .

history

The western tube of the tunnel was opened on May 20, 1884 as part of the standard-gauge, single-track coal railway from Barmen , today a district of Wuppertal, via Sprockhövel to Hattingen . A second tube to the east of it dates back to 1902, according to an affixed year. In order to cope with the increased volume of traffic since the railway line opened, a second track had to be built from Wuppertal to Schee. In this steep section there was no alternative station where trains could meet. After the war, the railway line was only operated on a single track.

During the Second World War, increasingly important war industries were moved underground in order to protect them from air raids. These so-called U-relocations were given different cover names depending on the type of property used . Bird names were reserved for railway tunnels and so the Scheetunnel was managed as a U-relocation Kauz .

After a set-up time of only three months from August 1944 to March 1945, parts of the Messerschmitt Me 262 turbine hunter were installed in the tunnel by the Homann company from Wuppertal-Vohwinkel .

In 1984, after a hundred years of use, the tunnel and the railway line were shut down.

Todays use

In 2013 and 2014, the western tube was renovated and converted into a combined cycle and hiking trail. Since December 2014, the Scheetunnel has connected the coal railway line of the Von-Ruhr-zur-Ruhr cycle path network with the Wuppertal northern railway line .

Species protection

There were considerable disputes between participating interest groups over the protection of bats . Of the tunnels of the so-called Nordbahntrasse, the two tubes of the Scheetunnel contain the highest biodiversity and the highest number of individuals. A report of 30 November 2009 by Professor Reinald Skiba from the UW noted the presence of the following species: alpine bat , lesser noctule , Daubenton's bat , common pipistrelle , greater mouse-eared , Pipistrelle and pond bat . The detection was carried out with ultrasound measurements and the examination of crusts of the Tawny Owl .

The east tube is closed to protect the animals and is not accessible to humans. The NABU hopes despite pedestrians, skaters and cyclists in the future on the whereabouts of non-human mammals such as mouse ears , Myotis bats and Noctule in the western part. In June 2011, Brussels issued an order to close the west tunnel in the winter months. By using less powerful LED lighting that only radiates downwards, the tunnel was ultimately able to be opened all year round. Only at special times, e.g. B. during the swarming out of the bats after the winter rest or on New Year's Eve, the tunnel is also closed at night from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
