The 2002 FIFA World Cup was hosted jointly for the first time in Asia by South Korea and Japan (the final took place in Japan). Initially, the two Asian countries were competitors in the bidding process. But shortly before the vote, they agreed with FIFA to host the event together. However, the rivalry and distance between them created organizational and logistical problems.

On July 6, 2000, Germany was appointed host by the FIFA Executive Committee in Zurich.

2026

The host of the Soccer World Cup 2026 was announced in Moscow on June 13, 2018. In contrast to previous World Cup awards, it was not the FIFA executive that decided on the award, but rather the assembly of member associations. To win a candidacy, an applicant needed an absolute majority of the votes.
