1942
Argentina, Brazil and Germany applied for the 1942 World Cup. Because of the outbreak of World War II, the tournament was canceled before an organizer was appointed.
1950 and 1954
On July 26, 1946, the FIFA Congress in Luxembourg appointed Brazil to host the 1950 World Cup and Switzerland to host the tournament in 1954.
1958
Sweden was the only applicant and was selected as the host on June 23, 1950 in Rio de Janeiro, with no opposing candidates.

1974, 1978 and 1982
The organizers of the three football world championships 1974, 1978 and 1982 were selected on July 6, 1966 by the FIFA Congress in London. Spain and West Germany stood as hosts for the 1974 and 1982 World Championships. Germany withdrew from the 1982 bidding process, while Spain withdrew from the 1974 bidding process. Mexico, the host of 1970, also withdrew, so Argentina won the bid.

Colombia was the only candidate and was chosen unopposed on June 9, 1974 in Stockholm by the FIFA Executive Committee to host.

The 2002 FIFA World Cup was hosted jointly for the first time in Asia by South Korea and Japan (the final took place in Japan). Initially, the two Asian countries were competitors in the bidding process. But shortly before the vote, they agreed with FIFA to host the event together. However, the rivalry and distance between them created organizational and logistical problems.
2006
On July 6, 2000, Germany was appointed host by the FIFA Executive Committee in Zurich.

The selection of the host countries took place on December 2, 2010 at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich. After completion, it was clear that the World Cup would take place in Russia in 2018 and in Qatar in 2022.

The host of the Soccer World Cup 2026 was announced in Moscow on June 13, 2018. In contrast to previous World Cup awards, it was not the FIFA executive that decided on the award, but rather the assembly of member associations. To win a candidacy, an applicant needed an absolute majority of the votes.
