Mayor until 1919
Mayor of the city of Wilhelmshaven has existed since it was granted city rights on August 4, 1873. Before that, the civil administration of the young settlement was the responsibility of the Prussian Admiralty.

Lord Mayor since 1919
With the district freedom of the city of Wilhelmshaven in 1919, the mayor became a lord mayor .

In 1946 the British military government introduced a local constitution based on the British model. Afterwards there was an elected council, which elected an honorary mayor from among its members as chairman and representative of the city.

Senior City Directors
From 1945 until the introduction of the single track of the city administration in connection with the Lower Saxony municipal code of 1996 there was the senior city director as the full-time head of the city administration. The last city director, Arno Schreiber, was able to remain in office until the end of his regular term of office. Since January 1, 2003, there is only one full-time Lord Mayor. He is also head of the city administration and representative of the city and is directly elected by the people.
