Eberhard Menzel (born December 1, 1944 in Wilhelmshaven ) is a former German local politician ( SPD ). From November 1, 1986 to October 31, 2011, he was Lord Mayor of Wilhelmshaven.

Menzel, a member of the SPD and holder of an administrative diploma from the Administrative Academy, had been a member of the Wilhelmshaven city council since 1981 . From 1986 to 2002 he held the office of honorary Lord Mayor of Wilhelmshavens and since January 1, 2003 he was the first directly elected full-time Lord Mayor of the city.

After the local elections on September 10, 2006 and the formation of a Jamaica coalition , i.e. a cooperation between the CDU , FDP and Greens parliamentary groups in the city council of Wilhelmshaven, the SPD parliamentary group and Menzel as mayor no longer had a majority in any committee. As a result of this situation, Menzel came under increasing political pressure, which, however, eased again after the Greens terminated the Jamaica coalition.

In the local elections in 2011 , he no longer ran for office. He was succeeded by Andreas Wagner (CDU), who won the mayoral election on September 11, 2011 against the SPD candidate Thomas Städtler and seven other candidates.

After 25 years in office, Menzel was retired on October 26, 2011 by 300 guests from politics, administration, business and the navy.

In 2012 it became known that the public prosecutor's office in Oldenburg suspected Menzel, the former managing director of the municipal Reinhard Nieter hospital Jörg Brost and some local politicians in connection with Brost's retirement scheme of serious infidelity. Brost had retired several years before reaching retirement age and still received payments from the hospital amounting to 18,000 euros per month. After Menzel and Brost's house searches and four years of investigations, it became public on September 12, 2016 that the public prosecutor's office wanted to indict Menzel and Brost. Since February 4, 2019, Menzel and Brost have had to answer in a criminal case before the LG Oldenburg on charges of infidelity in a particularly serious case.
