background

In 2015, the Met Office and Met Éireann announced a joint pilot project to name storm warnings; At the same time, the population was asked to submit name suggestions as part of the Name our Storms campaign. For the first time for the 2015-16 winter season, a list of names was published based on first names common in both the United Kingdom and Ireland . On September 19, 2016, a new list of names was announced for the 2016–17 winter season. Names are given in the UK as soon as a storm is rated amber ('be prepared') or 'red' ('take action') in the warnings of the National Severe Weather Warning Service.

Duration 19. – 20. November
Top gust: 106 mph (171 km / h)
Lowest central air pressure: 965 hPa
Victim: 2
Power outages: 1000

Storm Angus got its name on November 19, when it was foreseeable that the south and south-east of England and especially the Channel coast on November 20 would be hardest hit by the north-east moving storm. In France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands the storm was known under the name "Nannette". The Channel Island of Guernsey recorded gale-force winds and the strongest gust of wind since 1990, the year the record was set.

More than 1,000 houses in the south-west of England were temporarily without electricity, mostly in Devon . Residents near South Molton , Devon have been evacuated due to flooding . Further flooding has been reported at Braunton and Bradiford , Devon and at Swanage in Dorset . High winds affected train traffic in the south east of England, as well as canal ferry traffic in the port of Dover , and a running event in Brighton was canceled.

National Grid reported that a ship's anchor was believed to have damaged four of the eight cables on the HVDC cross-channel link , causing half of the transmission capacity to be lost.

A woman rescued by helicopter from the troubled seas near Folkestone later died in hospital. A retiree was found dead in his car three days after the storm, which was swept away by the floods on the River Ogmore .

Storm Doris got its name on February 21 and affected Ireland, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands on February 23. A peak gust of 94 mph (151 km / h) was recorded at Capel Curig , Wales. On the approach to the British Isles, the storm intensified explosively because the central air pressure of the system fell by more than 24 hPa within 24 hours, namely to 974 hPa.

In Wolverhampton , falling debris killed a woman, and in Swindon , a woman was run over by a street sweeper after the wind blew her empty stroller into the street and she followed him. A man died on February 26 from injuries sustained when a falling tree fell on the car he was in. A student was seriously injured when the storm toppled a roof at her school in Milton Keynes . Flybe flight 1284 from Edinburgh to Amsterdam crash-landed at Luchthaven Schiphol because the right rear landing gear collapsed; there were no injuries in the accident.

Snow and rain also affected road, rail and air traffic, and there were power outages.

Storm Ewan was named by Met Éireann on February 25th and hit the island on February 27th. Ewan couldn't really delve into, so the high wind property damage in Ireland was limited to the south coast.

The table below lists all winter storms that have been named by the official weather services in the British Isles. According to PERILS AG, two storms in the 2016/17 winter season caused damage in excess of € 200 million: hurricanes Egon and Thomas.

(† Zeus was not named by a national weather service, but was widely used by the French press; it is probably an incorrect reference to another low pressure area named by the Free University of Berlin.)
