At the instigation of Bishop Franz Joseph Rudigier , the first Franciscans of the Tyrolean province came to Maria Schmolln in 1864 . In 1871 the original priest's house was expanded so that ten Franciscans could live in the monastery. In 1941 the National Socialists dissolved the monastery and in 1945 it was returned to its original purpose.
