The previous building, which was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1348 and no longer rebuilt, was first mentioned in a document in 1251. It was not on the site of the present castle, but in an elevated position further south. From 1272 the Ortenburgers were enfeoffed with the rule of Kellerberg and served as their ministerial seat and namesake ("de Chelerperch"). Over the Counts of Cilli , who came into possession of the castle after the Ortenburgers died out in 1418, rule came to Emperor Friedrich III in 1456. His son, Maximilian I, first handed over Kellerberg as a fief to Sigmund von Dietrichstein in 1514 . However, it soon became his full property ( Allod ). In 1527 the castle was enfeoffed from Sigmund to Christoph Keller von Kellerberg, whose family remained fiefdoms until they died out at the end of the 18th century. However, the feudal lord changed in 1592 when the Khevenhüller family bought Paternion, to which Kellerberg belonged. In 1782 the rule went to Johann Widmann. The castle has been owned by the Rothauer family since 1894.

Today's Kellerberg Castle is a massive, three-storey building with two diagonally placed round towers, built at the beginning of the 16th century. The cubic, rectangular residential building covered by a tent roof has no inner courtyard. The round towers are provided with a conical roof. On the eastern front there is a round arch portal on the side of which there is a memorial stone with the coat of arms of the Dietrichstein family from 1548. The interiors are decorated with stucco ceilings. A tiled stove with figural representations comes from the end of the 17th century.
