The Roman Catholic parish church in Weißenstein , consecrated to St. Leonhard , stands in a dominant position on the mountain slope above Weißenstein in Carinthia. The parish was founded around 1100 by the Brixen monastery and was first mentioned in a document in 1149.

Building description

From the Romanesque church only masonry in the basement and on the first floor of the tower is preserved. The retracted, lower, early Gothic choir dates from the 14th century. The nave was built in the second half of the 15th century. The choir is supported by two-tiered buttresses , the nave three-tiered. On the south wall of the nave and in the choir, Gothic pointed arch windows with tracery have been preserved. The frescoes from the second half of the 14th century on the north outer wall of the choir were uncovered in 1974. They depict the death of Mary in the first yoke , above the crucifixion and a saint under a Gothic arcade; in the second yoke the fragment of a Christophorus can be seen. The tower with round-arched, axially displaced sound openings is crowned by a pointed gable helmet. The ossuary is located in the basement of the tower . The Gothic west portal has a coved stone wall with a tympanum in the pointed arch .

In the three-bay nave, a ribbed vault rises above polygonal pillars. The central keystones are round and painted. On the side there are 16 coat of arms keystones, including the noble families of the Ortenburgers , Dietrichsteiners and Khevenhüller . The three-axis baroque wooden gallery with a flat ceiling and balustrade was built around 1700. The Maurach organ from the 19th century originally comes from Naarn . A pointed triumphal arch connects the nave and the two-bay choir with a five-eighth end . In the choir, a ribbed vault with square keystones rests on consoles , some of which are designed as head consoles. On the north side of the choir there is a profiled, rectangular sacrament niche . The pointed arch portal on the south wall of the choir provides access to the sacristy vaulted with a net ridge on the tower ground floor. The fresco on the north wall of the nave was donated by Peter Wassermann an der Stuben in 1542. This decalogue fresco with the corresponding explanatory inscriptions is a document of the Protestant era of the Church. At the top of the fresco cycle with a total of 21 image fields, the delivery of the Ten Commandments to Moses can be seen, including the contemporary violation of the commandments and the subsequent punishments, which are illustrated with the ten Egyptian plagues .
