List of French cavalry regiments of the early modern period

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Ancien Régime, the French cavalry consisted of different types of troops: the actual cavalry (misleadingly referred to as Cavallerie légère ("light")), the dragoons who originally fought on foot and, from 1694, increasingly also hussars . On the other hand, only the gendarmes of the Guard belonging to the royal household troops were counted as cavalry .

Explanation of the system

The last name (mostly region) and the year of foundation have been added to the list below. This is intended to facilitate comparability. This numbering consistently follows the Ticino line-ups . If several regiments were founded in one year, Ticino added a second number (e.g. "1743/7" = seventh French regiment that was set up in 1743). This is followed by the names of the regiment owners or the name (possibly name of the commander) or the region designation. Ticino decided, unlike Susane, regiments that had not existed for a long time (about 10 years) not to place them in a tradition.

Meaning of the characters used: "*" = foundation, "†" = dissolution, "<" = origin, ">" = whereabouts, "=" = dual function as another standing regiment.

House troops of the king

The king's house troops ( Maison du Roi ) comprised different units that were not only used for representative purposes and for the king's guard duty. Some units were also mounted and were sometimes used as regular mounted troops:

The actually heavy cavalry in France included the regiments de cavalerie, while the light cavalry consisted of dragoons, hunters for sacrificial horses and hussars.
