List of places in Turkey inhabited by pontiffs
The list of places inhabited by pontiers in Turkey lists all 52 places in the Republic of Turkey where pontiers live in significant numbers. All places are in the east of the Black Sea region in the province of Trabzon . In addition, this list offers a selection of the names of the places commonly used by Pontians. After the Treaty of Lausanne on January 30, 1923, the Muslim pontiers were spared from the population exchange between Greece and Turkey because they are Muslims . Extensive isolation enabled Pontier to preserve their archaic language. Until a few decades ago, the Pontier spoke predominantly the Pontic language . Nowadays the speakers, with the exception of a few half-speakers, are only older speakers and the language is generally no longer passed on to the younger generation. The contiguous area of the Pontier in the districts of Çaykara , Dernekpazarı and Köprübaşı is called Holo ( Pontic Χολό Choló).
