overview

Alsace is one of the most castles-rich regions in Central Europe. Charles-Laurent Salch (see literature ) has 455 complexes including the castles that were lost . In the Vosges , the hilltop castle dominates , mostly as a Hohenstaufen complex, because Alsace was a Hohenstaufen empire and owned royal palaces in Haguenau and Eguisheim . Virtually all castles were destroyed in the wars of the 17th century and are ruins. The only hilltop castle that has not been destroyed is Lützelstein Castle . The greatest density of castles can be found on the eastern slopes of the Vosges between Saverne and Thann and in the northern Vosges - geographically actually the southern continuation of the Palatinate Forest - between Wissembourg and Bitche in Lorraine . In the interior of the Vosges, the density of castles decreases significantly.

The castles and palaces in the Upper Rhine Plain and in the Vosges valleys are less spectacular . In addition to numerous moths , of which mostly only the castle hill has been preserved, there are some late medieval water castles , which in turn often replaced older moths. There are very few low castles dating from the Staufer period , the Palatinate of Haguenau and Eguisheim Castle , the “Burgstall” in Guebwiller and the Wangen Castle near Wasselonne are to be mentioned . The last three named all have the rare octagon shape . Usually the moated castles of the lowlands were destroyed or replaced by modern castles. Most likely, Breuschwickersheim Castle and Osthausen Castle have retained their medieval character.

In Crooked Alsace (Département Bas-Rhin) on the other side of the Vosges there are a small number of castles and former moated castles of a shape similar to that in Lorraine .
