reception

Giovanni Russonello ( The New York Times ) named it one of the ten best jazz albums of 2019. “It's masterful and unpretentious, full of original compositions driven by powerful rhythm rather than structural complexity, and always by the resilient movement of this experienced drummer are driven."

Jeremy Pelt in the Jazzkeller Frankfurt am Main, 2017

Jim Macnie wrote in JazzTimes that when compared to the sextet's Detroit album, “his new record from a New Haven gig of the same era makes its power even clearer.” Live at Firehouse 12 is accompanied by the fast-paced snare beats of “Pilgrim's Progress ”full of outcry and gain strength with every new exchange of ideas. Bishop's use of the bass clarinet, Pelt's sense of harmony, and the band leader's creative ideas sometimes make the record's temperament seem like an unholy mixture of Eric Dolphy's Live at Five Spot and Clifford Brown / Max Roach's Live at Basin Street . Allen's poetic aggression on “Silly One”, Lightcap's traversal of “Tale of Bricks”, a sweet and sour filigree from Bishop in unexpected places - when mixed with Cleaver's wild pulse, everything becomes an indispensable document of the creativity of the 2000 years .

The critic of Jazztrail noted that this new appearance by the sought-after drummer / composer Gerald Cleaver is a bottomless pit, full of energy and robustness. In addition, this is a swing record in which his razor-sharp drumming skills consolidate a rhythm section that also includes pianist Ben Waltzer and bassist Chris Lightcap. With their knowledge of rhythm and their charismatic accompaniment, they support the melodic journeys of trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and saxophonists JD Allen and Andrew Bishop, a strong frontline. This is a real group work, the author continued, in which Cleaver demonstrates his ability to adapt to a specific situation. Cleaver and his Violet Hour group gave these compositions, whose musical strength tends to increase the pulse rate, a stimulating freshness
