Lo Wei

Lo Wei ( Chinese  羅維  /  罗維 , Pinyin Luó wéi , Jyutping Lo 4 Wai 4 , born December 12, 1918 in Jiangsu , China , † January 20, 1996 in Hong Kong ) was a Chinese director for Kung Fu and martial arts Arts films. His most famous films were those with Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan . In addition to director and producer , Lo Wei also worked as an actor.

Life

Before Lo Wei started his career as a director, he worked in many films as an actor in the 1950s. Wei also appeared as an actor during his time as a director. After his last film as a director, Wei appeared in a few films as an actor. Most recently in 1990.

At the beginning of his directing career in the 1960s, Wei made films for the Shaw Brothers before moving to Golden Harvest in 1971 with the film The Death Fist of Cheng Li . The film was a great success and helped Bruce Lee achieve his breakthrough, but Lo Wei himself became better known through the film. A year later, Lo Wei directed Death Greetings from Shanghai . The film was his second collaboration with Bruce Lee. This film was also very successful. However, due to disputes between Wei and Lee, there was no third collaboration between the two.

After greetings from Shanghai , Wei directed the film The Boss of San Francisco with Chuck Norris in the lead role and several kung fu films before the first collaboration with Jackie Chan with Wooden Man . The film, which was one of Chan's first starring roles, was one of the Bruceploitation films . Wei wanted to make Chan the new Bruce Lee in this way, which did not change in his other films. After Wooden Man , Wei worked exclusively with Chan. He shot with him, among other things, New Fist of Fury (also known as master of all grades 3 and two fists stronger than Bruce Lee ), a kind of sequel to death greetings from Shanghai . Wei's last film was Superfighter 2 in 1983, also with Jackie Chan.

Wei has also served as producer and screenwriter on some of his films . He also appeared occasionally in small roles in his films. Wei also founded and ran the Lo Wei Motion Picture Company .

Wei was said to have had a connection with the Triads .

Lo Wei died of heart failure in Hong Kong on December 12, 1996, at the age of 77 .
