Longido is a district in the Tanzanian region of Arusha with the capital Longido . It borders the Republic of Kenya to the north, the Kilimanjaro region to the east, the Meru , Arusha and Monduli districts to the south and the Ngorongoro district to the west .

geography

Longido is 7,782 square kilometers and has around 123,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). The district stretches from Lake Natron in the west to the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in the east. Individual isolated mountains rise from the land, the Ketum Legs, the Gelai and the Ol Doinyo Lengai . This active volcano is also the highest point in the district at 2960 meters. The climate in the capital, which is 1352 meters above sea level, is mild, according to the effective climate classification . With an average annual temperature of 20.3 degrees Celsius, 595 millimeters of rain fall.

City of Longido

The largest ethnic group in the district are the Maasai . The population rose from 81,550 in 2002 to 123,153 in 2012. This corresponds to an annual growth of 4.1 percent. During the same period, the literacy rate rose from 31 percent to 46 percent.

Facilities and services

  • Education: In 2012 there were 45 elementary schools with 216 classrooms. 398 teachers provided lessons for the 19,260 students, resulting in a teacher-student ratio of 1:48. In the eight secondary schools, 183 teachers taught 4509 students, so there were 39 students for one teacher.
  • Health: Three health centers and 22 pharmacies are available for medical care for the population (as of 2019).
  • Water: 42 percent of the population had access to safe and clean water (as of 2012).

Economy and Infrastructure

Of the 24,644 households, 37 percent had a radio and 5 percent a television, 54 percent had a mobile phone and two percent had an Internet connection.

Agriculture

Agriculture and animal husbandry are the most important industries in the district, around 84 percent of the population are employed here. Of the total area, nine percent is arable land, five percent is forest and 82 percent is pasture land. The main crops are corn, rice, potatoes and beans. In 2019, 400,000 goats, 217,000 cattle and 300,000 sheep were kept in the district.

The main income from tourism comes from photo safaris and hunting. In addition to Lake Natron with its bird life, there are four hunting reserves of over 1000 square kilometers each.

Infrastructure

  • Roads: Of the 560 kilometers of roads in the district, 240 kilometers are national roads. A third of the roads are in poor condition, almost twenty percent are not passable when it rains (as of 2012). The main road is the T2 national road from Arusha to Kenya.
  • Airport: Kisongo Airport in Arusha is 80 kilometers away from the district capital.

Nature reserves, sights

  • Natronsee: The size of this outflow-free lake varies from 1000 square kilometers after the rainy season to a few square kilometers at the end of the dry season. It is home to 100,000 water birds and up to 2.5 million Lesser Flamingos populate it during the breeding season.
